How to record songs as a guitarist

Hello there,

You might wonder what gears/equipment I use to produce music, and thus this article I wrote is to explain my creative process. Grab a coffee cause we’re in for some ride.

First thing first, guitars. I own a 7 string baritone guitar by Agile, the exact model is Agile Septor 727. I must say love this guitar, especially it’s neck-thru body. I’ve sent it to a Luthier to have it pro-setup, meaning lowering it’s action for easy shredding. I also made other adjustments like upgraded to Bareknuckle Ragnarok Pickups (It djent’s hard!) and also added a cat fret inlays for aesthetics purposes. I use this guitar mainly for droptuned songs and heavy riffings.

Second guitar I own is the cheapest Kaysen 6 string guitar I found on Shopee (Shopee is a e-commerce shop). The purpose I bought it is to learn how to be a luthier, doing setup on my own, filing the nut and all that. There’s no risk of doing it wrong, since I could throw it away if I messed up!

Third guitar I own is a NK 6 string headless guitar. I wanted a Strandberg but I couldn’t afford it (duh~), so NK guitars was the best cheapest alternative. It’s cost-effective and the construction and hardware aren’t that bad. The string actions are already low, I don’t need to send it for setup, and it shreds! I might upgrade the pickups one day. So I mainly use this guitar for soloing and standard tuning songs. (Soloing and string bending is really difficult to do on a baritone guitar, that’s why I bought this standard scale guitar, my small hands appreciates it~).

For the bass I’m using a 5 string Warwick Rockband $$ Corvette bass guitar. It’s the cheapest bass released by Warwick I believe, as it’s made in China. I really want a higher-end bass when I have the money. :3c As for all the songs I recorded currently is using that bass.

Okay next question is, what do I record the guitars through? I don’t have a real amp since I live in an apartment and might receive noise complaints. Therefore I’m using amp modelers, to be specific it’s the Avid Eleven Rack, as it’s the cheaper alternative to an Axe-FX (really coping hard here). It has all the effects, amp sims and cab sims, so I don’t need to buy any effect Pedals :D. It also acts as a Audio Interface, so my signal chain is just my guitar goes directly into the Eleven Rack and into my PC.

As for the DAW I’m using Reaper. It’s free built-in plugins are good, and it’s also free to use. I’ll buy the license when I have enough money, I promise ><. It has all the plugins you need for Mixing and Mastering really, such as EQ, Compression, Reverb, Delay, Limiter, etc.

I don’t play drums, so I’m using a software or VSTi. The Steven Slate drums is a free plugin, I just write so midi on the piano roll and it makes drums sound hurray! For orchestra sounds I’m using the BBC Symphony Orchestra by Spitfire Audio which is also free. I love these free goodies, I’ll buy their products when I make a living from my music ><

And that’s it. That’s all I need to produce my songs. Leave a comment if you have any questions. Thank you for reading.

It was nice to read about your arsenal. I didn’t know you could do this many things with the free version of Reaper(I use Cakewalk by BandLab). It seems nice at first that nowadays we can do so many music things as a one man studio, but then when you rack up the equipment costs… the VSTs… haha. It was the Agile Septor in the Xwitter ebminor9 video right?

      Thanks for the read!

The free version of Reaper functions the same as the paid one. The only difference is the reminder to purchase the full version at startup.

I totally get what you mean, VSTs can be incredibly expensive. Try holding out for a Black Friday sale, or better yet, look for a free alternative.

I’m not sure which video you’re referring to, but here’s one of me playing the Agile Septor 727 in action.
